Solved: wp-admin/upgrade.php?_wp_http_referer=%2Fwp-admin%2F

Summary:

This article shows how to resolve the login redirect that can happen when WordPress’ update hasn’t finished properly. Normally this redirect will be due to incomplete database update. You will see this redirect in the browser: wp-admin/upgrade.php?_wp_http_referer=%2Fwp-admin%2F

What happens:

When trying to log in to the back end of a WordPress site the login will redirect to wp-admin/upgrade.php?_wp_http_referer=%2Fwp-admin%2F address. There will be no errors shown either on the page or in the error log. The redirect will take you to a blank page.

Solution:

1 – Using a file manager from your hosting control panel or an FTP client navigate to the wp-content folder. Inside of it find the plugins folder.

2 – Rename the plugins folder to old_plugins.

3 – Open up your WordPress site and go to the login page.

4 – You will now see the page that will say: Database Update Required.

5 – Click the Update WordPress Database button.

After it’s done, it will take you to the next screen. Make sure to not log in to the site yet, otherwise you might lose some of your plugin setting or all plugins will get disabled!

6 – Go back to the file manager and rename the plugins folder back to plugins.

All done. The issue should now be gone and you will be able to log in to your site again.

New refund process on WPQuestions.com

A new refund process has been implemented on WPQuestions.com

Now each asker gets refunded automatically if there were no answers and if none of the answers were helpful. If there were some helpful answer the refund will work as following:

  • The asker requests a refund. He/she can specify what % of the entire amount is needed (up to 100%) and how much will stay in the community.
  • The status for the question is set to voting and all experts vote just like they normally would. They have 24 hours to do so.
  • The experts get notified that an asker requested a refund. Each expert can agree or disagree to give us his or her share. Again 24 hours are given.
  • The asker then gets notified about the results of the voting process. The asker can agree to the voting decision and the refund gets issued or disagree in which case the site’s administration will get involved to resolve the refund claim.

‘Twas the night before implementation

‘Twas the night before implementation

T ‘was the nite before implementation and all through the house,
Not a program was working, not even a browse.

The programmers hung by their tubes in despair,
With hopes that a miracle soon would be there.

The users were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of inquiries danced in their heads.

When out in the machine room there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my desk to see what was the matter.

And what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a super programmer ( with a six-pack of beer ).

Her resume glowed with experience so rare,
She turned out great code with a bit-pusher’s flair.

More rapid than eagles, her programs they came,
And she cursed and muttered and called them by name.

On Update! On Add! On Inquiry! On Delete!
On Batch Jobs! On Closings!

On Functions Complete!

Her eyes were glazed over, fingers nimble and lean,
From weekends and nites in front of a screen.

A wink of her eye and a twitch of her head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

She spoke not a word, but went straight to her work,
Turning specs into code; then turned with a jerk.

And laying her finger upon the “ENTER” key,
The system came up and worked perfectly.

The updates updated; the deletes, they deleted;
The inquiries inquired, and closings completed.

She tested each whistle, and tested each bell,
With nary a bomb, and all had gone well.

The system was finished, the tests were concluded,
The users’ last changes were even included.

And the user exclaimed with a snarl and a taunt,
“It’s just what I asked for, but not what I want!”

Do you remember when Facebook was doomed?

Does anyone remember the uproar that occurred when Facebook rolled out the Wall that allows you to see what your friends are doing? That was about the first time I’d heard of Facebook, and at the time I thought, “Sounds like they really fucked up. I guess they are doomed. No company can survive this much negative feedback.”

The funny thing is, nowadays this “Wall” is the only reason why anyone ever uses Facebook.

Allowing askers to vote

I often think about what might make voting more fair. Ideally we could have more people voting who are objective and neutral. And yet, we only want people to vote if they are an active part of the community. We do not want strangers to be able to drop in and start voting — they would disrupt the trust that builds up among the regular users of the site.

At one point I allowed any asker to vote on any question. That was vulnerable to abuse: an expert could set up a 2nd user account, ask a question for $5, and thereafter use the 2nd account to vote money to their 1st account.

I have decided to once again allow askers to vote. But the right will be restricted to the top askers: those who have spent more than $150 during the last year. The sum should be enough to deter abuse. And these are clearly askers who are active with the community.
